It seems the first "calima" of the year also known as "Saharan Air Layer" is upon us already as the temperatures have soared today up to 35 degrees. This time last year we also experienced this weather phenomena of suspended dust and warm wind, which originates from North Africa.AEMET have put a yellow weather warning in place for this particular calima, which is to affect all of the Canary Islands from today Thursday, 18 March 2010 10:00 until Friday, 19 March 2010 15:00.
During a calima you may find you have a dry throat or feel like you have no energy, you must drink plenty of water and take special care if you have any respiratory problems such as asthma. Take some shade and be very careful, although the sky looks grey and dull, the sun is still very intense and you can get very burnt, so sunscreen is still essential.
